In 2023, CTQ Consultants began exploring opportunities to expand our landscape architecture services beyond British Columbia, driven by the vision of our managing partner Byron Douglas, to bring our expertise to communities across Canada that could benefit from resilient, people-focused design.
The goal was clear: to identify regions where CTQ’s experience in Landscape Architecture and nature-based solutions could help rejuvenate places and address real community challenges — from aging infrastructure to the impacts of severe storm events.
A Vision for Nature-Based, Climate-Resilient Design
As we evaluated potential markets, one theme became increasingly important: the need for nature-based solutions that support climate resilience, ecological restoration, and community well-being. We saw opportunities to work with:
- Smaller municipalities seeking sustainable infrastructure solutions
- Communities recovering from natural storm events
- Areas with aging public infrastructure
- Projects focused on revitalizing parks, streetscapes, waterfronts, and public spaces
Our team’s experience in creating functional, sustainable, and beautiful outdoor environments positioned CTQ to contribute meaningfully to these communities.
Opening Our Halifax Office
That journey led us to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where we opened our office in July 2024 – pictured above with Byron and El at work.
What began as a strategic expansion quickly became something more personal. The planned journey is never quite the same as the lived one, and over the past two years we have embraced a new chapter filled with learning, growth, and connection.
Embracing the Maritime Landscape and Culture
The Maritimes are remarkably different from British Columbia — from the coastal landscapes and climate to the history, communities, and culture. For our team, this has created valuable opportunities to adapt, learn, and grow as designers and collaborators.
We salute the CTQ Landscape Architecture team, whose energy, enthusiasm, and commitment have been instrumental in making our Halifax expansion a success. Their willingness to embrace change and support projects across the Maritimes has helped us build strong relationships and deliver meaningful work throughout the region.
